Pure Hex’s Trick Of The Light: A Ballad to Nostalgia

Austin Underground

By Sami Jo

Life is short, and we are cruelly reminded of its shortness in our best moments. Think, have you ever wished for a moment to never end? Pure Hex captures this feeling perfectly in their new single, “Trick Of The Light.”

Pure Hex, an indie/alternative band from the East Bay of California, dropped “Trick Of The Light” on Jan. 17th, 2025. The band, consisting of Zach Dighans, Hussain Khan, John Annuziato, Luke Clingerman, and lead vocalist Marta Alvarez, has a 90’s alternative sound with a mysteriously ethereal vibe that pulls their audience in. As a part of their second upcoming album Five Of Tears, dropping on Feb. 28th, 2025, “Trick Of The Light” features dreamy vocals, reeling guitar sounds and heart-thumping drums, which transport its listeners to a world of nostalgia and reminiscence.

“Trick Of The Light” encapsulates the feeling of having to watch as time slowly gets away from you. The music video follows the band as they attempt to dissect the telekinetic secrets of an unearthed spell book. Just as they finally understand the book's full potential, their parents walk in and the magic ends, paralleling the feeling of time catching up with you.

Marta Alvarez sings with a sense of desperation, breaking up the chorus’ lyrics with a sudden change in registers. She is desperate to stay in the moment forever, desperate to go back and relive the moment, questioning, “Why, do all things go away?” Look back; how long have you spent your life in regret, “while the time goes on?” Pure Hex urges listeners to appreciate short-lived moments and look forward to the future.
